RULES
 

The Federation for Sport at Altitude is pleased to announce the Skyrunning World Championship based on a series of races in various countries. The events are open to athletes affiliated to a national sports or mountain federation or association in countries where these exist.

1. RACES -
A minimum of six and a maximum of eight races are selected in at least five different countries. The selected events will be on an international level in terms of athlete presence, notoriety and organization.

2. FEATURES – At least five races must feature the “skyrunning” parameters (see rules extract) with a marked vertical incline and reach at least 2,000 metres altitude. A maximum of two races may have mixed courses or a maximum altitude inferior to 2,000 metres with the object of giving an opportunity to participate to as many countries as possible.

3. PARTNERS – In order to guarantee sufficient prizes in the circuit final and to support adequate promotion, visibility to circuit sponsors may be required and the main sponsor may place their name and logo alongside that of the circuit for commercial use.

4. ORGANIZERS - Visibility will be given to circuit races and their sponsors in the specific promotional material and through federal communication. The race rules must be compatible with those of the FSA and in the case of dispute, the FSA rules will overrule. Race organizers are obliged to adhere to the “World Series Race Standards” and the “Style Guide”.

5. ORGANIZATION – Each race organiser is responsible for permits and relations with the local authorities, the race entries, the preparation and marking of the course, with flags or arrows at forks or where the route may not be clearly comprehensible. The organizers are also responsible for all the race signage, check points and aid stations, assistance and rescue. The organizers responsible for all the race material, medical assistance and assistance along the course and for retired athletes.

6. AID STATIONS – The organizers must provide sufficient supplies at the aid stations for the duration of the race or make sure that the athletes are self sufficient.

7. SAFETY - The organizers must guarantee basic signage for the safety of the competitors, that it be ecological and removed immediately after the closure of the competition. In the event of a clearly defined course without flags or other signage, safety measures and checks must be adopted and explained prior to the event at a specific briefing. In addition to each race rules, it may be necessary to include the use of tights, gloves, windproof jackets, camel bags, helmets etc depending on the course or weather conditions.

8. PARTICIPATION FEE – A fee will be set for organizers participating in the circuit which will contribute to the prize money and general expenses. The amount will be set annually and may be partially waived in return for circuit sponsors’ space. Other requirements may be negotiated such as hospitality for technical staff, FSA representatives and an extra budget for the final race.

9. VISIBILITY – Visibility given to the world circuit in race organizer’s promotional material must include the logo “Skyrunner® World Series”, as well as the main sponsor, in finish line area, on the award stand and the start/finish arch. The ranking leaders (first male and first female) must wear the leader’s jersey supplied by the SWS, whatever their race number or bib. Other forms of visibility or bib space and their costs may be successively agreed upon.

10. REQUEST TO PARTICIPATE – Requests from organizers to participate in the Skyrunner World Series must reach the FSA by September 5 of the preceding year. The request must be on the organizers’ headed paper with full race details or on the specific FSA invitation form sent to organizers.

11. EVENT CALENDAR - The list of events will be confirmed by November 5 of the preceding year. The race date must be compatible with the other circuit races. In the case of non compatibility, the organizers must be willing to anticipate or postdate the race by 7 days to be able to participate in the circuit.

12. JURY – An FSA delegate must preside at each race. The composition of the jury must be indicated before each race and include the course director, an FSA representative and a competitor. The decision of the jury is final and in case of dispute, the decision of the FSA representative and the FSA rules will be applied.

13. RACE CANCELLATION – The races cannot be cancelled or postponed unless under extreme conditions. Each race organizer must prepare an alternative reserve course in the case of unfavourable weather conditions such as fog, snow etc.

14. COMPETITORS – the World Series is open to athletes of 18 years of age or over in possession of a medical certificate valid for the law of the country where the race is held. The final podium is reserved for FSA members or members of federations associated with the UIAA, the IOC, or mountain associations recognised by the FSA. The results are final, based on the position obtained in each race.

15. RULES – It is compulsory for competitors to respect the race rules, to participate in the pre race briefing, to carry the compulsory material specified, to observe good sportsmanship towards the other competitors. The ranking leaders (first male and first female) must wear the leader’s jersey as supplied by the SWS organizers. If the jersey is not worn in the race, no penalties will be applied but points in the SWS will not be assigned whatever the final position of the runner.

16. CATEGORIES – Only two categories exist: men and women.

17. RESULTS - Each race will assign points based on the winning men’s/women’s results according to the “Ranking points breakdown: 100-88-78-72-68-66-64-62-60-58-56-54-52-50 down to 2 points and up to the 40th position for men and the same system for women down to 15th position. Every race can have only one winner, which can be based on a photo-finish or the rules of that country. Only races that time each runner may have a tie.

In a 6 or 7 race calendar, athletes may use the four best results obtained in the Series. When 8 or more races exist, athletes may use the five best results obtained in the Series. (Skyrunner® World Series Champions: based on one World Series Trials Race and three World Series Races. These WS Trials, team points are not awarded).

The points in the final race will be doubled for the first ten men and first five women in the general results providing they have obtained points in at least two previous races in the circuit. In the event of a tie, the best result in the previous race will be counted.

A national or team ranking system will be adopted based on the points accrued by the first three men and the first woman in each race. The composition of the national team or team must be declared at the beginning of the Series and updated at least 12 hours before each race. The team with the most points will be declared “Skyrunning World Champions”. Each team may be composed of a minimum of two to a maximum of 12 components. A team member cannot change to another team after the start of the Series. All members of each team must be identified by the same kit or logo.

18. PRIZES – The total prizes amount to €10,000 and include benefits, trophies and medals. Cash prizes may vary from year to year and will be officially assigned only to those athletes that are present at the final race.

19. START – The race start or line up may vary according to the different categories or based on ranking or according to race results.

20. PENALTIES – Penalties will be applied in accordance with the various race regulations and those of the FSA. In the event these don’t exist in the race rules, the FSA rules will apply.
A penalty of from 3 to 20 minutes will be applied for:

 
    · throwing of trash outside the check point areas (100m +/-)
· receiving outside aid in unauthorized areas (eg not at specified points such as aid stations)
· not following the race course signage, voluntarily or otherwise
 
  Disqualification will occur in the event:  
    · the bib is not on view or has been tampered with
· not passing through compulsory checkpoints
· unsportsmanlike behaviour – not assisting another competitor in need of help
· not participating in the awards ceremony
· refusal to undergo antidoping tests or a positive result in an antidoping test
 
 


21- COMPLAINTS –
Complaints must be written and countersigned with the complainants name and bib number at the finish line or on publication of the results. A deposit of €50 may be required which will be refunded if the case is accepted. Complaints may not be made after one hour of the publication of the results. The complaints will be put to the Jury and the decision, if an FSA representative is on the Jury, is final. Appeals may be presented to the FSA with the same procedure and the verdict will be given within ten days of receipt.

22-DOPING – Anti doping controls may be carried out in any of the races according to the rules of each nation, the protocol (WADA) and in agreement with the national federation concerned.
